Headlands Residency Spring 2006
Some things up my sleeve this spring ...Gym Music
A piece for many musicians playing small sounds, spatialized across the cavernous 100-plus-year-old soldiers' gym that is my studio at the Headlands. The piece was premiered performed at the Headlands Open House on Sunday April 23, with an absurdly accomplished and patient group of musicians:
Aurora Josephson and Lorin Benedict, voice
Aaron Bennett, saxophone
Aaron Novik, clarinets
Jim Ryan, flute
Darren Johnston and Henry Hung, trumpet
Rob Ewing and Scott Larson, trombone
Mark Chung and Dina Maccabee, violin
Rob Reich, accordion
John Schott, Nathan Clevenger and Wayne Grim, guitar
Jason Levis, Moe! Staiano and Jon Brumit, percussion
Here is a very mono recording of a very stereo experience:
Collaboration with Deborah Aschheim
Deborah, an incredible LA-based installation artist, is undertaking a massive, multifaceted project about memory and remembering. I am working with her on the sound component of her upcoming installation, to set a group of words to music so that they might be remembered by her well into her old age. I'm working with fabulous San Francisco vocalists Katy Stephan and Michelle Amador on the songwriting and recordings.
Bass Alone
Most nights after dinner, I head up to the stunning David Ireland-renovated East Wing in Headlands Building 944 to play and record some solo bass. The pressed-tin ceiling makes for some gorgeous natural reverb. Think I'll make a record.
More loud bands/quiet films
To close out my stay here, on May 21 I have planned an evening of film and improvised music. The theme is UNREAL, with creepy and eccentric contributions from Ghostcandle Derby and Heftpistole.
