Transbay Bass Choir

The Transbay Bass Choir, directed by yours truly, is a new collaborative of Bay Area double bassists from all corners of the musical spectrum, joining together under the vast umbrella of improvisation. The ensemble performs original compositions and structures for improvisation by Bay Area musical heroes Phillip Greenlief, Suki O'Kane, Steve Adams, Beth Schenck, Gabby Fluke-Mogul, Jason Levis, Nathan Clevenger, Jon Raskin, Randy McKean and others, as well as works composed and arranged by members of the group. The Transbay Bass Choir growls, squonks, grooves, whispers, and sings—a gathering of all these massive, resonant instruments is a sight to behold, and a wonderful sound to hear.

The choir made its debut live on-air at the KFJC studios, in May 2019, in a four-hour live bass marathon called Planet Bass:

The ensemble re-convened in Southern California at Sunspace in August 2019, with a refresehd lineup culled from Southern Califronia bass stars — here's a drawing by Dean Westerfield of what went down:
